Breaking for the greater good

I once got lost in a thought, “What would I have been doing if I did not join an IIM?”

Many of us look forward to joining an IIM and might have multiple reasons in mind. I am one of them who fumbled upon various reasons but never really realized why am I here.

Then I tried experimenting with whatever I can contribute to the people around me. Being an artist, garnering around the potential artists in the college every other weekend and jamming together with them became my proclivity. You wouldn’t believe me if I say that jamming helped us socialize among ourselves way faster than I expected.

Days passed, everyone got busy with their academics and exams. Suddenly, one day, the sight of a few kids across the gate gave me a sense of pleasure as soon as I noticed them being so energetic, enthusiastic and cheerful. I decided to teach dancing to those kids. I knew that it was hard to control 25 to 30 kids at a time, so teaching dance (style: Breaking) to them seemed like an impossible task. I came up with an idea of offering candies before and after the session and it worked wonderfully. Fighting for candies to patiently waiting for candies proved that they slowly inculcated discipline, dedication and an ample amount of interest in dancing. In spite of the language barrier, I tried to make them fathom my message by using body language as a bridge. They somehow managed to understand that I come up with new moves every weekend, as they practiced every week and curiously looked forward to the weekend to meet me and demonstrate the moves which they have been training for throughout the week.  What really surprised me the most in this process was the encouragement they got from their parents, looking at them being content by just staring at their kids truly felt like a blessing.

Now, having seen the real potential and dedication of the students in IPM, I have decided to share my art with them. I have started teaching in college. Though the students I teach are fewer in number, I noticed them coming way too regularly with a no-excuse attitude. Few days in the game made me realize the fact that the next generation has a lot to offer us in order to upgrade ourselves constantly in this highly competitive driven environment.

Finally, the first year of MBA has come to an end. Honestly, I haven’t found my answer about “What would I be doing had I not joined an IIM?” But most certainly I found myself after joining an IIM. From jamming to teaching, every interaction taught me something new about myself. Each and every day here has taught me how to progress myself and look for opportunities around me. Dancing clearly altered my mind, body and soul. The desire to be better than yesterday and trying to inspire people around me to be good at what they really love is something which made me understand myself; that making my name is not what drives me. My true search lies in finding the right way to deliver my values and principles to the upcoming generations through my teachings.

During all this introspection, it seems like I have taken a lot from the place that I have landed upon, which in turn created a huge positive impact on my personality. Probably, this is how synergies work. What do you think?
