The Diverse IPM Batch of IIM Bodh Gaya

What comes to my mind when I think of the word diversity in IIM Bodh Gaya?

The most common answers can be in terms of gender ratio, regional diversity, academic diversity, etc. The students under the Integrated Program in Management at IIM Bodh Gaya are diverse in all these aspects and much more. Out of a total batch strength of 67, the institute has forty students from science, twenty three from commerce, and four from humanities. The male to female ratio is around 2:1, which provides viewpoints from both genders in class discussions. The batch has people from all corners of India who celebrate a variety of festivals all year round.

The information cited above is certainly extraordinary. However, this article aims to provide some insights into the diversity of this enlightening IIM from a different angle.

While the entire world sleeps, we, the students of IPM, keep moving forward to fulfill  our dreams. It is the time after 9 p.m. when we really become active. Be it people who rush to complete their assignments due past midnight, or those who just want to get a head start on exam preparation – the hustle and bustle is real. But work does not stop at midnight. What happens before midnight is work, but what happens after midnight is the magic of the Enlightening IIM. It isn’t visible to the outsiders but what happens under the alluring moonlight represents the diversity at IIM Bodh Gaya.

The hobbies and passions pursued by us are vastly different from one another. Artists let their creativity run wild and create beautiful paintings and sketches. Writers write till their protagonist becomes a masterpiece. Dancers practice Kathak to dazzle everyone in the upcoming dance class. It is hard to pinpoint what the students are doing on a particular night because their interests are so varied. Perhaps they are preparing for a competition that excites them, or they are looking for internships. They could be the founders of Edunitee or simply playing “Stumble guys” with their friends. People in the IPM batch are diverse no matter how you define diversity. And it is these differences that makes the program and its students unique. Who would have thought that a place expected to be filled with bookworms would have such distinctive individuals?

The committees and clubs at IIM Bodh Gaya are also a good representation of the IPM Batch. From people in the Envision Cell having the entrepreneurial craze to the fun-loving people in the Cultural Committee, IIM Bodh Gaya has it all. The club selection process is yet to start in full force. Still, clubs like Unnayan-The Music and Drama Club have made a lovable image in the minds of the future managers.

The diversity of the IPM students is also reflected in their contrasting opinions and viewpoints. There isn’t a single subject that hasn’t initiated a healthy discussion among the debating enthusiasts of IIM BG. Topics like ‘Capitalism vs. Socialism’ and ‘Development vs. Culture’ are mere examples of the countless themes debated in the classroom and in Whatsapp groups thereupon.

Despite all this diversity, the entire batch has one thing in common – mindfulness. The students learn about being mindful – the art of staying in the present – through various subjects like emotional intelligence and mindfulness, yoga, science of wellbeing, etc. and practice it constantly in their lives. People are not only attentive to each other’s needs and opinions, but they constantly strive to remain calm, collected and civil in the classroom and beyond. Despite their differences, the IPM Batch is united in its resolve to follow the mission and vision of their second home – IIM Bodh Gaya.
