Model WTO
On the 29th of September 2024, IIM Bodh Gaya organized Model UN based on the World Trade Organization event. There were numerous delegations present, including those from Brazil, India, South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, the EU, the USA, China, Pakistan, and the UAE, among others.
The delegates deliberated on eight significant issues, identifying seven as phone conversation issues and one as export-import trade compliance with WTO policies and rules. The trade spat between Brazil and Australia, which claimed that India was providing unjustified export subsidies on sugar, was one such example. Another case highlighted South Africa’s dispute with the EU over a ban on citrus fruit imports due to the fungal disease known as citrus black spot. Indonesia also protested to the EU about anti-dumping duties on essential fatty acid products it exported, arguing that the EU’s approach violated WTO prohibitions. Saudi Arabia became involved in a row with the EU over the anti-dumping measures regarding mono-ethylene glycol, which is a necessary chemical during production.
China was in a dispute with Australia over anti-dumping duties on wine. The U.S. asserted that additional duties levied by India on some American goods contravened trade agreements. The UAE wanted a settlement for the controversy regarding Pakistan’s rules against importing polypropylene films. Finally, China and the EU found themselves in a disagreement over taxes placed on electric vehicles that could prove a test case for international trade rules. These cases underscored a global landscape where economic interests frequently clash, necessitating arbitration to uphold the delicate balance of fair trade.
The session also encompassed an emergency arising from the farmers’ protest in India concerning legislation related to fisheries. The IRC team enlisted volunteers to perform the entire scene live before us, enhancing interaction and enjoyment.
The winner of the event was the side of India; they managed to sustain their position against the United States on the issue of extra duties. The primary basic defense presented by India focused on WTO rules compliance, and its defense was heard positively by the panelists. The European Union received special recognition.
This WTO Model UN conference provided students with the opportunity to examine case studies of actual trade conflicts and to challenge themselves as diplomats and trade negotiators. The event not only enhanced participants’ understanding of international trade laws but also offered practical guidance in areas such as negotiation, speaking, and policymaking, making it highly beneficial for all participants.
