Fresher vs. Experienced: Finding the right balance

Success in the business world has always depended on the “battle for talent”. Hence, regardless of the company or industry, the goal of every selection and recruitment procedure is to find the ideal candidate for a position. With time, the procedure has become more intense, for the decisions made will decide the continued survival in the corporate world. This forces businesses to reinforce their hiring strategies and focus on specific skill sets. Companies usually have two options – freshers with diverse talents or experienced people with work knowledge.

Freshers have an open mind and are prepared to explore new avenues in a business environment. This openness promotes new ideas, energy, creative approaches to challenges, and new or alternative work methods. It allows companies to foster a creative culture, for there exists the opportunity to nurture. Furthermore, research has shown that natural talents are adaptable and transferable. Although hiring freshers has its advantages, companies must ensure that new hires do not abuse their freedom to cast doubt on expertise and adopt an incorrect perspective.

With experienced professionals, companies have a robust support system as they come with years of practical experience and they are aware of the impact of specific actions and strategies. The working records of experienced professionals can be used for assessing their capacity for decision-making and people management. However, hiring experienced individuals may have its drawbacks, including the possibility of a “been there, done that” mentality. There could also be a mismatch if they aren’t adaptable since the corporate world today must deal with continual change.

Hiring freshers only may result in excessive training expenses and inadequate implementation whereas employing experienced people exclusively may leave the company lacking in adaptability and creativity. Freshers may be hired for positions with less risk, giving them room to develop and time to try out particular ideas. Experienced professionals are our greatest option if there is a need for quick results or for adherence to a hyper-growth plan for the year.

I believe a business will gain from recruiting both new graduates and seasoned employees. An optimal recruiting approach should include a balanced mix of recent graduates and seasoned workers. It would assist companies in using the capabilities of both groups and maintain flexibility moving forward.
